Sprinter Azeem beats former world junior champ in 100m dash

KUALA LUMPUR: United States-based sprinter Azeem Fahmi, who turned 19 yesterday, recorded a season-best mark of 10.14s in the men's 100m at the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Florida.

He clocked 10.14s to finish sixth in yesterday's race.

Azeem finished a rung above 2015 world junior champion Abdul Hakim Sani Brown of Japan.

It was Azeem's second 100m race since moving to the US on Jan 4.

Last month, the Perak-born, who is studying at Auburn University in Alabama, clocked 10.32 at the Florida State University (FSU) Relays Championship.

Azeem's former coach Amir Izwan said the sprinter is showing progress.

"Although he finished sixth, it was still a perfect birthday gift as he clocked a season-best mark," said Amir.

Cejhae Greene of Puma won the East Coast Relays by posting 10.01s ahead of second-placed Xie Zhenye of Tumbleweed Track Club (10.06s) and Dominique Alexander from Campbell University (10.11s).

Yan Haibin from Tumbleweed Track Club finished fourth with 10.11s, followed by Cole Beck of Virginia Tech (10.14s).
