Sprinter Azeem clocks season-best time in 100m

KUALA LUMPUR: United States-based sprinter Azeem Fahmi is getting closer to breaking his 100m national record.

On Friday, Azeem, who holds the national record of 10.09s, clocked a season best mark of 10.11s in the heats at the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Louisiana.

He finished second fastest in the heats.

Azeem, who is studying at Auburn State University in Alabama, will feature in the final later today.

Favour Ashe, also from Auburn, clocked the fastest time of 10.06s in the heats while Javonte Harding of Tennessee (10.13s) was third fastest.

It was Azeem's third 100m race since arriving in the US on Jan 4.

Azeem clocked 10.14s to finish sixth at the East Coast Relays in Florida last month.

In March, Azeem clocked 10.32 at Florida State University (FSU) Relays Championships.

Azeem's former coach Amir Izwan said the sprinter is gradually improving.

"I am happy with his progress, and 10.11s is a good time.

"I hope he will clock another good time in the final," said Amir, a school teacher at SMK Gunung Rapat in Ipoh.

Azeem's main goal this year is to clock 10.00s flat to qualify for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary from Aug 19-27.
