Long jumper Andre falters in Hangzhou

KUALA LUMPUR: Long jumper Andre Anura Anuar fell way short of expectation in the Asian Games in Hangzhou today.

The Malaysian finished a dismal 19th out of 20 participants in the men's qualifying competition at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Stadium.

The 24-year-old registered a disappointing jump of 6.71m, which was more than a metre away from his national record of 8.02m.

Andre was Malaysia's fourth track and field athlete that failed to qualify for the final.

The other national athletes who failed to progress to the finals were Umar Osman (men's 400m), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (women's 100m) and Grace Wong (women's hammer).

Andre, who won the triple jump gold at the Phnom Penh Sea Games in May, will feature in the triple jump final on Oct 5.
