Swimmers Andrew, Hoe Yean ready to hit world stage, says coach

KUALA LUMPUR: National coach Eric Anderson believes Andrew Goh and Khiew Hoe Yean have the potential to be world-class swimmers.

Andrew, who was crowned Sportsman of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak after winning five gold medals, has secured his spot for the 2025 World Championships, which will be held in Singapore from July 11-Aug 3.

During Sukma in August, Andrew clocked 27.40 seconds in the men's 50m breaststroke, setting a new national record.

His time qualifies him for the championships under the 'B' category (28.29s), and he is just 0.07 seconds shy of the 'A' category time of 27.33s.

"We have a couple of swimmers really close to world standards, and Andrew is one of them," Anderson said when contacted on Saturday.

"The other is Hoe Yean. He recorded 3:48.36 in the 400m freestyle at the Australia Open in April, and the 'A' qualifying time is 3:48.15."

Anderson hopes both Andrew and Hoe Yean can push to achieve the 'A' qualifying times before next year's World Championships.

The American coach added that teenage sensation Duha Zulfikry (200m, 400m freestyle), Bryan Leong (50m, 100m butterfly) and Jayden Tan (400m individual medley) have also qualified for the World Championships under the 'B' category.
