Former cop turned businessman killed in Zamboanga city

MANILA: A former policeman turned businessman was killed in a gun attack in Zamboanga city.

One of two bodyguards was also wounded in the attack on the businessman identified as Alvin Perez, 49, on Thursday, Philstar.com reported.

Perez was driving his sport utility vehicle with his bodyguards when they were waylaid in Sitio Lumiyap in Barangay Divisoria.

"The motorcycle-riding suspects emerged from behind and fired on the victims," Major Albin Cabayacruz, Police Station 5 commander, said. Perez died while being treated in a hospital.

The injured bodyguard was identified as Danny Boy Bellesa. The other bodyguard was unhurt and managed to fire at the suspects.

Responding policemen recovered more than 60 bullet shells for a caliber 5.56 rifle and a magazine for a caliber .45 pistol at the scene.

Meanwhile, a policeman who allegedly shot a traffic enforcer in Quezon city has been charged with murder before the prosecutor's office.

Brigadier General Nicolas Torre III, Quezon city Police District director, said a murder charge has been filed against Lieutenant Felixberto Tiquil, a member of the Manila Police District (MPD) anti-car theft unit.

"We have filed a murder case because we do not see any justification in what he did," Torre said in an interview broadcast over Teleradyo.

Tiquil is accused of gunning down Edgar Follero, 32, a traffic enforcer of the Quezon city department of public order and safety, after he mistook the latter as a motorcycle thief along with his companion in Barangay Veterans Village on Wednesday.
