SAN FRANCISCO: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd unveiled two new premium phones at its ‘Unpacked’ event in San Francisco, the United States, on Tuesday.
The top-of-the-line Galaxy S20 is a fully-5G device that features a brand-new camera architecture which combines AI with Samsung’s largest image sensor yet for better image quality. It also comes with personalised music for every moment of the day, videos “the way they are meant to be seen” and on-the-go console-style games.
“As we enter this new decade, 5G will completely change how we communicate and how we experience the world around us,” said Dr TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.
“As all three Galaxy S20 variants come with 5G connectivity, Samsung is providing a next-generation device for transforming people’s lives. With an incredible, AI-powered camera, you can capture the moments as they happen and connect more seamlessly with the people you love,” he said at the event.
The Samsung S20 series comprises there models – the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, all of which are 5G-enabled.
Powered by a big, intelligent battery, the Galaxy S20 series comes with a 25W fast charger, while the S20 Ultra supports 45W Super Fast charging as well.
The entire series is equipped with massive storage as standard (128GB for S20; 128GB, 256GB and 512GB for Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra).
Samsung has also increased the camera resolution for the three models. The S20 and S20+ have a 64MP camera, while the S20 Ultra has a 108MP camera.
In addition, all three phones use Space Zoom technology which utilises a combination of Hybrid Optic Zoom and Super Resolution Zoom, which includes AI-powered digital zoom, allowing you to zoom in from a very great distance.
The Galaxy S20 and S20+ use up to 30X zoom; while the S20 Ultra can do up to 100X zoom.
If Samsung shocked the world with its Galaxy Fold at the 2019 ‘Unpacked’ event, this year, the South Korean giant unveiled another surprise – the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung’s first foldable glass display, that offers a unique user experience (UX).
This statement-making foldable smartphone is designed for those who see cutting-edge technology as a way to express themselves.
Engineered with first-of-its-kind foldable glass, Galaxy Z Flip bends the laws of physics, and features a 6.7-inch display that folds into a stylish and compact form factor that fits in the palm of your hand.
With its innovative Hideaway Hinge and custom-built UX, the phone offers elegant new ways to capture, share and experience content.
“At Samsung, we were encouraged by the excitement for the Galaxy Fold. Galaxy Z Flip is an important next step as we look to build the foldable category by bringing to consumers a new form factor, new display and most importantly, a new kind of mobile experience,” said Roh.
“With Galaxy Z Flip’s unique foldable design and user experience, we’re redefining what a mobile device can be, and what it enables consumers to do,” he said.
What’s interesting about the Galaxy Z Flip is its folding capability. Unfolded, it can stay open at multiple angles, unlocking opportunities for selfies that show more of the world around you; and expressive video chats with Google Duo – all hands-free.
The phone also features a new mode called ‘Flex’ which is a custom-built user experience for Galaxy Z Flip’s unique, forward-folding form factor. When the device is free-standing, the display automatically splits into two 4-inch screens so users can easily view images, contents or videos on the top half of the display, and control them on the bottom half.
The phone features an optimised dual battery system that holds more power without taking up more space.
Galaxy Buds +
Besides the two phones, Samsung also launched the Galaxy Buds+, which features Sound by AKG, 2-way speakers; 3 mics and long battery life of up to 11 hours and an extra 11 hours in the case.
Samsung will start shipping the Galaxy S20 series from March 6; while the Galaxy Z Flip will be available in limited quantities in Mirror Purple and Mirror Black, starting in selected markets like the US and Korea on Feb 14, followed by Mirror Gold in select countries.
The Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra are priced at RM3,599, RM3,999 and RM4,999 respectively and will be available at all major telcos and Samsung authorised dealers (pre-order starts Feb 12 to 26).
The price of the Galaxy Z Flip has yet to be announced.
