KUALA LUMPUR: Popular TV host-actress-celebpreneur Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor’s decision to hold an event at a night club last night had raised eyebrows, leading to an overnight controversy on social media.
Members of the public questioned the reason behind Neelofa’s choice for a venue that is considered inappropriate and unsuitable for someone who is viewed as a successful female Muslim icon.
It is understood that the event was hosted to celebrate the launch of her new hijab collection under her brand Naelofar Hijab, as well as to celebrate her 29th birthday.
Adding fuel to the fire, videos of what appeared to be hijab-wearing guests dancing sultrily before an audience during the event also made its rounds on social media, sparking an outrage of reactions online.
A Facebook user, Syaz Wina commented: “I once adore Neelofa because she is very successful with her business. But after this incident, sorry Lofa I found this marketing strategy isn’t right at all. You have to choose a better place to launch your product.
Another Facebook user Siti Rahmah commented: “This is sad. Hijab/tudung is a sacred symbol of muslimah.”
Instagrammer nurainsfihi said: “This is a shame to muslims around the world!”
Meanwhile, in earlier news reports, Neelofa told the Press that she had chosen to ignore public criticism regarding the issue, claiming that she was aware of the repercussion.
“I picked this venue as it suited the theme of the event. If I had chosen elsewhere, I would have to fork out extra budget.
“If I choose to respond towards criticism by Netizens, it will be a never ending cycle. So this year, I choose to shrug it off when people have something to say,” she said.
