Investing in good sleep products for babies and toddlers leads to peaceful slumber for parents too
THE popularity of baby and children’s products is a recent phenomenon, fuelled by the increasing disposable income of young parents, larger social media awareness and increased concern for the health of little ones.
However, products for baby’s sleep, such as mattresses and pillows, are still very much under-produced.
I realised this when I was looking for a pillow for my son, after his old one was ruined when he threw up on it. That particular pillow was made of kapok or kekabu, which cannot be washed.
Unlike a Stokke cot or a Babyzen Yoyo stroller, mattresses and pillows are not Instagram-ready products.
But good ones help babies sleep better which, in turn, ensure parents get enough rest too.
Getha Bedding (M) business development director Amelia Tan says brands make products which can yield profits.
Baby pillows, however, are costly to make because there are different ones for different ages so there is a need for different moulds.
“Most parents are also reluctant to buy expensive mattresses and pillows for their children. This is another reason why not many companies manufacture good quality bedding for young ones,” says Tan.
She adds that the market is dominated by PU foam baby sleep products due to its affordability.
“Natural latex baby products are more expensive as the material is hard to source. However, this is justified by its benefits —latex is naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic, which is suitable for newborns. The breathable nature of latex is also an added benefit to prevent baby from overheating when sleeping,” she says.
DO IT DIFFERENTLY
As a company, Getha has always prided itself on doing things differently.
So 18 years ago, before baby products was even a booming industry, it already made a decision to launch a baby collection with three products — baby mattress, pillow and bolster.
“We believe that sleep is not only important for adults. We cater to every stage of human sleep development — newborn, toddlers, teenagers, adults and seniors,” says Tan.
“Through the years, we have developed more baby products to cater to different needs of parents and their infants.”
These include dimple, Getha Air and baby contour pillows for babies and toddlers from birth to 6 months old. There are also Getha pillows, baby 3D pillows and dimple shoulder pillows for those aged 6 to 12 months. Additionally, there are nursing pillows, latex mattresses, bolsters and foldable pads, all made of latex.
“Babies and toddlers grow at a rapid pace. The pillow height, especially, must support the neck correctly to ensure as much uninterrupted sleep as possible.
“All Getha products — whether for babies, children or adults — come with nanosilver anti-bacteria technology for a clean sleeping environment.”
Tan says parents should always pick a reputable brand as babies spend a large amount of time sleeping. Certification, she adds, is an indication of safety.
“Our baby accessories, such as covers, come in cotton or tencel with nanosilver technology to ensure a clean, bacteria-free environment for the baby.”
