SHAH ALAM: PKR’s national congress yesterday provided a platform for party members to shore up support for party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to replace Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as the Selangor menteri besar.
“No one is more qualified than Dr Azizah herself, who has led the party since its formation in 1999. All of us should give our unconditional support to her,” Kedah PKR delegate Gooi Hsiao Leung said yesterday.
Gooi, who is also Alor Star member of parliament, said those who felt that a woman was not qualified to head a state government were “backward-thinking”.
In her presidential address, Dr Wan Azizah called on DAP and Pas to stay united in the opposition coalition.
“We must have the will to continue helping the people. This is the reason why we joined the political arena all those years ago,” she said at Stadium Malawati here.
Relations between the Pakatan member parties were strained recently as PKR, DAP and Pas had differing views over who should be in charge of the Selangor government.
PKR and DAP had agreed to nominate Dr Wan Azizah to replace Khalid as the new MB, but Pas’ top leadership had questioned the proposed move.
The impasse was only lifted after Pas’ top hierarchy decided to withdraw its support for Khalid last Sunday and chose to back Dr Wan Azizah.
