GEORGE TOWN: A grand reception to celebrate the 81st birthday of Japanese Emperor Akihito was held at Hotel Jen Penang recently.
It was organised by the Consulate-General of Japan in Penang. Some 200 well-wishers clinked their glasses and shouted ‘banzai’ (long live) to the Chrysanthemum Throne.
Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh, who represented the state government, proposed a toast to the His Imperial Majesty, while Japan Consul-General to Penang Ryuji Noda proposed a toast to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Guests were later treated to the finest Japanese buffet and an assortment of exclusive Japanese sake brought specially for the event.
The reception was also attended by Consul-Generals of other countries and dignitaries from the northern region.
Born on December 23, Emperor Akihito is the 125th emperor of Japan. By Predeep Nambiar
