KUALA LUMPUR: Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan today lashed out at Penang's housing Exco Jagdeep Singh Deo for his inaccurate and irresponsible remarks with regards to affordable housing in Penang.
Abdul Rahman said that he was shocked with the Penang government's claim that it is not the state government's responsibility to provide land for affordable housing.
He also questioned the sincerity of the Penang government in wanting affordable houses to be built in Penang, when all available state land that belongs to the state government is sold at a high price to private developers for the construction of luxurious housing estates.
Abdul Rahman said other states do provide land to federal agencies to build affordable housing for its people, except Penang.
Currently, over 10,000 affordable houses in Penang cannot be built due to lack of approval by the state government of Penang which could be because the proposal came from federal government agencies.
In the end, due to petty politics by the Penang state government, the people of Penang is suffering due to high property prices.
