MARANG: Pulau Redang will soon have its biggest housing project when 160 units of affordable flats will be built there towards the end of next year.
Batu Rakit state assemblyman Bazlan Abdul Rahman said RM28.5 million had been allocated to construct four blocks of five-storey flats for the low-income group.
He said each flat, to be sold at a subsidised price of RM120,000, will feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
“The flats will ease the burden of the lower-income group who have been living in cramped and dilapidated homes.
“Some of the present homes are occupied by three or four extended families as many are unable to purchase their own homes.
“It is for this reason the state government has taken the initiative to build the flats, although we have to absorb high construction costs,” said Bazlan.
He said construction was slow-going as building materials had to be shipped in from the mainland.
“The supply barge has to rotate between the mainland and other surrounding islands to send its material.
“Therefore, we have to await our turn to receive the materials,” said Bazlan.
