PUTRAJAYA: Bauxite-mining in Kuantan, Pahang should be discontinued to prevent long term health risks through river contamination, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam said.

He said only time will tell the long term health effects on people, who have been exposed to bauxite.

“Residents in Kuantan are advised to drink only treated water and avoid drinking fresh river water, boiled river water and not eat fishes from the rivers.

“So far treated water is safe for consumption, and we are constantly monitoring the levels to ensure people are not exposed to any contamination.

“All form of metal have long term effects but it will take some time for it to manifest,” he said after delivering the ministry’s mandate for 2016, here, today.

He added the three-month moratorium on all bauxite mining activities in Pahang beginning Jan 15 by Natural Resources and Environment Ministry was an important step.
