KOTA KINABALU: No sun bears will benefit from a theme run that uses its name to attract participants.

A conservationist clarified the "Sun Bear Run" scheduled in Tanjung Aru on Feb 28 will not benefit the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre in Sandakan.

The centre's chief executive officer Wong Siew Te said he has spoken to the organisers about this and is convinced neither the centre nor the bears will benefit from the 9km run with ticket prices between RM51.25 and RM92.25.

“BSBCC is not taking part in this event nor has anything to do with it. We condemn any parties who use the name of endangered species and exploit them for their own benefit.

“We are regret to learn that this run is not a charity run where the profit will help works to conserve sun bears in Sabah. We wish to advise the public to be clear about the nature of similar events so that they do not end up paying to take part thinking that they are helping wildlife.”
