KUALA KANGSAR: Kolej Universiti Islam Sultan Azlan Shah (KUISAS) has been upgraded and renamed as Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS), with immediate effect.

Announcing this today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said this was one the pledges made by Barisan Nasional during the last general election.

"This is also a continued recognition to Kuala Kangsar as the oldest education town in the country.

"For a start, we (Federal government) will provide a full annual grant to the university," he said before performing Friday prayers at the KUISAS mosque.

Joining him were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir and BN Kuala Kangsar by-election candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid's sons - Wan Emir Astar Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar, Wan Imar Izzat, Wan Iskandar and Wan Muhammad Ammar.

Najib, in his speech urged Muslims to stay united and reject extremist ideology.

"The government is committed to upholding Islam by emulating a moderate approach based on the maqasid syariah (objectives of Islamic principle).

"The Syariah index will serve as a benchmark to determine if the county is fulfilling the objectives of the Islamic principles," he said
