KUCHING: Three families from Kampung Siang-Siang, Lawas were evacuated about 10pm last night due to a flash flood.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Nor Hisham Mohammad said a total of 17 victims, including seven adults and 10 children, were staying in the same house.

A total of five firefighters were deployed to the scene, located about 15 kilometres away. The victims were placed at the Terusan Community Hall.

"The flood was due to hours of downpour and high tide phenomena which hit the state. However, they returned home this morning," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, the Lundu district, located about 90 kilometers from town, was also affected by the high tide phenomena and rain which began about 7am.

He said the road access was cut off about 9.30am with vehicles facing problems crossing the road.

However, the water eventually receded and the road was accessible by about 1pm.

"As for now, the situation throughout the state is still under control and our men are closely monitoring the high-risk and low-lying areas," he added.
