KUANTAN: A girl, who claimed to have found the body of a newborn baby in a drain near Bukit Sagu, was arrested on Sunday after she was revealed to be the infant's mother.

Her 27-year-old boyfriend was picked up at a house in Felda Bukit Sagu the same day.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Aziz Salleh said both of them have been remanded until Thursday to facilitate investigations into the case.

"The case is classified under Section 318 of the Penal Code for hiding the death and abandoning the body of a newborn," he said.

Aziz said police suspected something amiss when the girl and her friend, both in their 20s, brought the remains to the Bukit Goh police beat base at 4pm.

They claimed to have made the gruesome find in a drain near a clinic in Bukit Sagu.

Aziz said upon questioning, the girl - a student of a higher learning institution - admitted that she was the infant's mother.
