MELAKA: A former lawyer with a disability was charged in the Sessions Court here with criminal breach of trust involving more than RM47,000.
Tuah Atan, 57, from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, was alleged to have committed the offence while serving as a lawyer eight years ago.
He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.
Tuah, attached with Tuah Hilmy & Hazudin firm, was alleged to have dishonestly misappropriated RM47,431.79 which he was entrusted to handover to Osman Hassan and Zamri Ekhpan.
He allegedly committed the offence at CIMB Bank Melaka Raya on Sept 20, 2009.
The offence, under Section 409 of the Penal Code carries a maximum imprisonment of 20 years with whipping, and also be liable to fine.
Earlier, Deputy public prosecutor Siti Ruvinna Mohd Rawi urged the court to deny bail but proposed RM60,000 should the court decided to grant bail.
Tuah, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lower bail on the grounds that he has a physical disability since birth.
He said his disability made it difficult for him to look for a job and he had been jobless for more than eight years.
He added that he currently supported himself and does not rely on assistance from any welfare body.
Meor set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered Tuah to report to the Senawang police station every first Saturday of the month.
He also set Dec 12 for mention.
