KANGAR: A 36-year-old man was charged with criminal intimidation for threatening Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin earlier this month via Facebook.
Y. Kumaresan, from Penang, pleaded not guilty as soon as the charge was read before magistrate Norhayati Ibrahim.
The clerk was alleged to have threatened to severely beat up Asri via the Facebook handle “Sandev Sandev” at an address in Mukim Chuping, Padang Besar, at 6pm on May 1.
He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code which carries a sentence of up to seven years’ imprisonment, fine or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Farhan Aliff Ahmad handled the case while Kumaresan was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation counsel Siti Hajar Ahmad.
Norhayati allowed bail at RM5,000 in one surety and ordered Kumaresan to not have any contact with Asri.
She then set mention of the case for May 17.
It was reported that Asri had lodged a police report the very day he received the threat over Facebook.
The man who made the threat had asked Asri to provide his address so that he could go to Asri to beat him up to the point of being severely injured.
He had also provided Asri with a mobile phone number so the latter could contact him directly and make it easier for his “wish to be fulfilled”.
However, it is not immediately known if the phone number was actually his.
