KOTA KINABALU: Eight prison wardens have been detained to facilitate police investigation into the death of an inmate at the Kepayan Central Prison recently.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Habibi Majinji said the wardens, including an officer, were arrested yesterday, to assist the murder probe.
"We have requested for them to be remanded today for seven days," he said without commenting further.
On Oct 4, the 36-year-old inmate was found unconscious and taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
An autopsy result showed that the victim had bruises on his head and body.
A police report was later lodged, lead to the arrest of eight individuals.
It was learnt the victim was serving his jail sentence for drug related offenses.
