BUKIT MERTAJAM: A couple, detained on Sunday on suspicion of abusing their 11-year-old daughter, will be charged at the Butterworth Sessions Court on Friday.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the couple would be charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
The section states that any person who has in his or her care a child that is being neglected, abandoned or exposed the child in a manner likely to cause him/her physical or emotional injury can be fined not exceeding RM20,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both.
“We received instruction fron the State Prosecution Office today to charge the couple on Friday,” Nik Ros said.
On Monday, police obtained a week-long remand order against the couple.
The abuse incident came to light after police rescued the victim from her home in the Ampang Jajar flats near here on Sunday.
After being rescued, the girl told police she had been beaten by her stepmother on the head with a helmet, causing both her eyes to swell.
There were also injuries ton her forehead, hands and legs.
Doctors who attended to her said there were old injuries on the victim.
A urine test conducted on the suspects – 38-year-old stepmother and 36-year-old father – came back positive for methamphetamine for the man.
Police investigation found that the victim was the only child subjected to abuse from a total of nine children the couple have.
The victim is currently at the paediatric ward of the Seberang Jaya Hospital for treatment.
