KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) must make a move towards digital publication rather than relying on physical publication, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
"DBP at the present moment leans more towards physical books. It is still in the process of moving to digital publication," said Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
He was replying to Datuk Mohd Zaim Abu Hassan (BN-Parit) who asked on the Bahasa Melayu Education Roadmap 2016-2025 in uplifting Bahasa Melayu in the country.
To a supplementary question from Datuk Fauzi Abdul Rahman (PKR-Indera Mahkota) who asked why DBP was no longer playing a significant role in elevating the national language, Mahdzir said if DBP was able to produce digital publications in addition to other programmes already held, it would then be at the prime level it once was in the effort to raise Bahasa Melayu.
"Not only that, DBP is also in the process of collaborating with other agencies to increase efforts in Bahasa Melayu publication and development."
Mahdzir also denied claims that no allocation was given in the 2018 Budget for Bahasa Melayu programmes, saying that allocations for the programmes were included in the ministry's overall budget. — Additional reporting by TEH ATHIRA YUSOF.
