PUTRAJAYA: Civil servants suffering from chronic diseases and who are unfit to work can opt to retire early through the Atas Sebab Kesihatan or ill health retirement scheme, which offers better retirement benefits.
Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Zainal Rahim Seman said the scheme had been given the green light by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
It would be tabled in parliament next month and is expected to be enforced in April.
He said under the scheme, those who retire early due to health issues would receive better benefits and monthly pension, similar to those who serve the full term until retirement age of 60.
“Through this new policy, civil servants can choose to retire early due to their health condition.
“This is only applicable for those who are seriously ill and incapable of carrying out their duties, which must be supported by a qualified doctors.
“Among the illnesses include stroke, psychological disorders, physical incapacity caused by accidents, or other chronic diseases.
“If we let these civil servants continue to work, we are worried about their health and whether it will affect their productivity.
"We also believe that if they keep on working despite being in poor health, they might feel unhappy for not being able to contribute fully.” he said.
