KUALA LUMPUR: Berita Harian celebrated its 60 years in journalism, delivering credible, moderate and unbiased news, at Balai Berita here tonight.
The 60th Berita Harian Anniversary Celebration held at Balai Berita was attended by more than 500 guests, comprising the publication's staff, former staff and writers who regularly contributed to the Malay daily.
The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd (NSTP) group, Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid said the publication which started off with only eight staff members back in July 1, 1957 and today it has expanded its horizon in all reporting genres in leaps and bounds in the last 60 years.
"BH has done remarkably well in keeping up with the digital and technology transformation demands of today.
"This is evident through the 4.6 million followers it has on its Berita Harian Online page, 1.1 million Twitter followers and more," he said.
Also present at tonight's celebration were BH Group Editor Datuk Mahfar Ali, BH deputy group editor and the chairman of the publication's 60th anniversary committee, Datuk Badrulhisham Othman, Media Prima Berhad group chairman, Datuk Seri FD Iskandar, New Straits Times Press Chairman Tan Sri Utama Ismail Omar, Media Prima managing director Datuk Seri Amrin Awaluddin, National Laureate Datuk A Samad Said, and Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation ( MCPF) senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Also present were former BH Group editors Datuk A.Kadir Jasin, Datuk Manja Ismail, Datuk Rejal Arbee, Datuk Ahmad Nazri Abdullah and Datuk Mior Kamarulbaid Sahid.
Berita Harian is one of the oldest Bahasa Malaysia publications, has evolved with time, by adopting digital technology in presenting factual, fast and accurate daily news, through the traditional print media as well as new media.
Jalil also complimented Berita Harian for being able to sustain and evolve together with time for six decades without having to compromise on the accuracy and quality of its reporting.
"BH has certainly reached great miles in terms of its news presentations and achievements, both locally and internationally.
He said the nine times Kajai Award recipient has also played a significant role in the education field for almost 20 years through its Seminar Bimbingan Peperiksaan for students.
The latest, he added is the publication's online FullAMark application which helps students revise and prepare for major examinations.
Another remarkable milestone achieved by the paper is the Anugerah Bintang Popular BH whoch has entered its third decade with over 5.2 million (12.9 TVR) viewers.
The guests also witnessed the launch of BH online's new image at the event.
