SEPANG: AirAsia will be offering special air fares during the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Sea Games (KL2017) later this month and in September.

The details of the offer will be announced soon.

Air Asia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said there will be many other initiatives in conjunction with KL2017.

"They will be announced in due course," he said at a press conference at AirAsia’s RedQ here today.

AirAsia is the official airline partner and Gold Sponsor of KL2017, which comprises the 29th Sea Games and 9th Asean Para Games.

"Air Asia is very excited to be part of the upcoming Games and we are especially thrilled to welcome the symbolic torch to RedQ.

"As a truly Asean airline, it is only natural for us to be part of the region's biggest sporting event, one that has inspired Asean with its message of unity and camaraderie," Fernandes said.

He spoke to reporters after the Sepang portion of the KL2017 torch run, which started at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) main terminal building and ended at RedQ, 5.9km away.

"Sport is a big part of what we stand for and we look forward to playing our part in bringing the people of Asean together.

"It does not matter which country comes out on top at the end of the Games because Asean is the true winner here," he said, emphasising on building the Asean brand.

Others who took part in the torch run were AirAsia Bhd executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, Air Asia X Bhd chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail and Air Asia China president Kathleen Tan.

Air Asia's line-up of athletes under the #DARETODREAM campaign includes track cyclists Azizulhasni Awang and Fatehah Mustapa, diver Leong Mun Yee, bodybuilder Faiz Ariffin and go-kart driver Muizzuddin Musyaffa.

The airline also regularly conducts training camps for aspiring athletes, which include annual coaching clinics with British Olympic swimmer Ben Proud and English football club QPR.
