MELAKA: A total of 580 participants from across the country will battle it out in the Barisan Nasional Elected Representatives Wives Annual Sports Tournament (PTIWRBNM) 2017 which will run until Sunday.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi launched the multi-sports event themed “Sukan, Sihat, Hijau” at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC).

Also present were Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is also the president of the Badan Amal dan Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri-isteri (Bakti), Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and wife Datin Seri Fadilah Abdullah, who is also the Association of Wives of State Leaders (Bistari) chairman.

Zahid who marked the opening by lighting a digital torch said the event would be the last before the country braces for the 14th General Election and pointed out the next tournament will see new members taking part.

“Whenever there is a general election, there will be at least 30 percent new faces. This is a fact. But I hope that the wives of elected representatives will remain as members and continue participating in such activity even when their husbands are not elected.

“This is because such a programme is a non-profitable programme, but one which encourages the interaction amongst members to give strength to their husbands and members,” he said in his speech.

Earlier, Rosmah said this year’s PTIWRBNM tournament was a special one as it was a continuity from the previous games held in Kedah this year.

“Although it is just eight months away from the previous championship, but I am sure all contingents have trained hard and made necessary preparations in all events.

“Obviously, winning is important in all competitions, but I wish to remind all that the meeting at this annual programme is not just a sporting event but its main objective is to create understanding, unity and the muhibah spirit amongst the wives of elected representatives,” she said.

Rosmah also lauded Bistari who hosted the event for introducing a mobile application for the tournament participants.

“Through the mobile app, all latest development such as participants’ registration, match schedules, results as well as news throughout the game can be obtained at the fingertip,” she said.
