CYBERJAYA: A Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council will be established soon with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as chair.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot announced this to the media after chairing the first TVET Malaysia ministerial coordination meeting involving seven ministries here today.
The council among others hoped to coordinate government agendas in catapulting TVET in Malaysia.
“It will be chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak,” he said at a press conference after the committee meeting here.
Also present was Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan.
The Human Capital Council, under the Economic Planning Unit, plays a role in planning the development and management of human resources.
Richard said that as a result, the committee meeting today saw the participation of all seven ministries related to TVET which reflects their commitment in empowering the education sector in Malaysia.
“The commitment is in line with government aspirations to raise the percentage of skilled workers in the country to 35 per cent in 2020 compared to 28 per cent currently.”
“The meeting is also a manifestation on the readiness of all parties involved to work together to mainstream TVET as underlined by Najib in the launch of TVET Malaysia while tabling the 2018 Budget before this,” he added.
In his welcome address at the meeting he announced the appointment of Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Lim Kok Wing as the adviser of TVET Malaysia.
He said that Lim was appointed as recognition to his significant contribution to TVET development in Malaysia.
