IPOH: A man suffered burns to 85 per cent of his body when he was trapped inside a factory which caught fire in the Bukit Merah Industrial area here today.

The 3.30pm fire is believed to have started at a petrochemical factory before it spread to another five factories.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department director (operation department) Mohamad Yunus Abu said the department received a distress call at 3.34pm.

"A team of 40 firefighters from Pasir Puteh, Ipoh, Simpang Pulai and Meru were dispatched to the scene.

"They were also assisted by a team of volunteer firefighters and the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela).

"The 53-year-old man was arranging some items when the fire started. He was taken to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for further treatment," he said in a press conference.

Mohamad Yunus added that three motorcycles and five cars which were parked near the factories were also completely destroyed in the blaze.

"We are still investigating the cause of the fire and the losses incurred," he said, adding that the firefighters managed to control the fire at 4.35pm.
