PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) is targeting a total of 85 per cent voter turnout in the 14th general election, through its "Jom Semak dan Jom Kita Mengundi" campaign.
Its chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said today that the campaign was one of the commission's efforts to encourage registered voters to check their voting information status apart from motivating them to go and vote.
He said there were 14,968,304 registered voters who were eligible to vote as of the 2017 fourth quarter Supplementary Electoral Roll (RDPT).
"With the general election around the corner, it is pertinent for voters to check their voting status before the polling day so that they will be able vote without any hindrance.
"Therefore it is hoped that through this campaign, there will not be any problems or confusion among the people. We also hope that the campaign will increase the level of awareness on the importance of voting," he said in a statement.
The EC has also conducted meetings with several ministries, departments, and agencies including electronic media to form a strategic partnership to ensure the success of the campaign, Hashim said.
"We also welcome contributions from non-governmental organisations (NGO), political parties and relevant stakeholders to relay message using their own approach.
"Our target is not attainable if EC doesn't get the support from everyone especially the media," he added.
Hashim also said the EC would make an official announcement on when registered voters can check on their voting information.
