KUALA LUMPUR: Sean Tee, 13, who went out of his way to help a stranger at Phuket International Airport is surprised by the praise lavished on him by netizens.
He said he was merely doing what was right. He said his parents had taught him to help people whenever he could.
“I always try my best to help them,” said Tee, who has two younger siblings.
Tee’s act of kindness was shared on social media by the very person who had received help from him at the Phuket International Airport.
Ady Sacol, an operations manager at IBEX Global Philippines, was on the same KL-bound flight as Tee.
Sacol said Tee was participating in a basketball competition but had to fly home as his grandfather had passed away.
“Sean Tee was sitting beside me at the boarding gate. I think he knew I was injured because I was on a wheelchair (other than my obvious no bandage-swollen-reddish-full of blood wound on my knee and foot).
“He asked me, ‘Are you hungry, tell me what food you want to eat?’ I was trying to get my wallet but Sean insisted on paying,” he said.
Tee continued to assist Sacol, including carrying his 15kg backpack, until they parted ways at KLIA2.
Meanwhile, Sacol clarified that it wasn’t the fault of KLIA2 that he could not find a wheelchair at the airport.
“What happened is Air Asia Malaysia will charge RM60 if you need a wheelchair.
“I asked the crew why I need to pay when in fact it is for free when I flew in Phuket?
“They just responded that it is the policy of AirAsia Malaysia which doesn’t make any sense at all to me,” he wrote in his Facebook page.
Sacol agreed to pay but was then informed that he would have to wait more than 30 minutes for the wheelchair.
So, he walked from the tube to the ramp with the help of Tee and the airport buggy was waiting for them there.
Sacol, who had a 10-hour layover in KLIA2, said a wheelchair was provided free of charge on his arrival in the Philippines.
Tee said his parents had praised him, and his classmates and teachers had been asking him about it ever since the story went viral.
Tee, whose hobbies are basketball and online game, Mobile Legends, aspires to be a scientist.
