KUALA LUMPUR: Now even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has weighed in over the rendang ayam “crispy” blunder on Masterchef UK.
He took to Facebook to poke fun at the situation which unfolded on the reality show by saying:
“Mana ada orang makan rendang ayam crispy (who eats crispy rendang ayam).”
Judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace had earlier said that Malaysian-born Zaleha Kadir Olpin's chicken rendang did not have the required "crispy" skin and proceeded to eliminate her.
The Telegraph also reported that the duo had started an intercontinental row for doing so.
As a reaction, British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vicki Treadell schooled Wallace and Torode by tweeting them.
“Rendang is an iconic national dish not to be confused with Indonesian options … it is never crispy & should not be confused with the fried chicken sometimes served with nasi lemak,” she tweeted.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said it was funny when foreigners try to school Malaysians over their own traditional fare.
“I wonder if this is a form of whitesplaining that we read in social media,” he added.
Anifah however said that despite the tension over the upcoming general election, Malaysians were unexpectedly united over sports and foods.
“We always hear that sports and food can unite Malaysians. Today that was proven with Zaleha’s elimination for her rendang ayam.
“This has indirectly bound Malaysians together be they from the government or the opposition,” he said on Facebook.
