KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Group owes its success to the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, according to its chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
Najib had given AirAsia the opportunity to grow, Tony said in a three-minute-and-seven-second video in conjunction with the 14th General Election published on Free Malaysia Today’s Youtube channel.
He advised Malaysians to make smart choices based on facts, and not hearsay come polling day on May 9.
“Don’t go to the polls based on information that may not be accurate, based on hearsay. Go to the polls based on facts and AirAsia is a fact.”
Recounting AirAsia’s path to success, Tony said: “I started as a little two-plane airline where the whole world was against us and over the last 10 years, we’ve seen a government that helped and provided us the opportunity to build ourselves into one of the biggest international brands in the world.
“And that is not easy for a Malaysian company to be recognised all over the world. We’ve won many awards and I credit the government who had to manage both government linked companies and companies such as ours in seeing what’s best for Malaysia.”
Tony added that based on a prime minister that prioritised the people, AirAsia had grown from owning two aircraft to 230 with 89 million passengers from just 200,000 passengers.
“I believe the prime minister put the people first and allowed AirAsia to grow despite opposition from all over the place.
“We hope in the way forward, companies such as us will thrive. There will be more AirAsia, there will be more jobs created, there will be more meritocracy, that is a Malaysia I dream for. So vote wisely and see you on May 10 on AirAsia,” he said.
