PUTRAJAYA: Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah today said it had carried out its responsibility in a fair and transparent manner in the 14th General Election (GE14) as entrusted by the Yang diPertuan Agong.

He said despite being criticised and hurled with various accusations, the EC had upheld to its principles as an independent entity and ensured that democratic practices were preserved.

He added that the smooth and peaceful transition of power with the establishment of the Pakatan Harapan government demonstrated that the mature democracy in the country would continue to prosper and be protected.

He said the GE14 results have been presented to the King on May 10.

“We would like to congratulate the seventh Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has been appointed to lead and govern the federal government.

“We would also like to extend heartfelt congratulations to all state governments that have been given the mandate to rule and administer their respective states,” he said in a statement today.

He said the EC also thanked all parties including election personnel, police, government agencies and departments, election candidates, voters, media and also those who were directly or indirectly involved in ensuring a smooth, peace and transparent GE14 process.

He said 82.32 per cent of the total voters had casted their ballots in the GE14, with 12,299,514 of 14,940,624 voters.
