KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Television Networks (MPTN), specifically TV3, is ready to carry “live” the Umno presidential debate between Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Khairy Jamaluddin on June 29.
MPTN chief executive officer Johan Ishak said he welcomed the programme, set to take place the day before the party polls.
This, he said, was dependant on whether MPTN would get the go-ahead from Umno to carry it “live”.
In fact, said Johan, MPTN was ready to widen coverage of the event by also carrying it on its social media and YouTube accounts.
“As we saw in May, when the 14th general election was going on, television programmes on the political affairs in the country are ‘hot’ issues, with 17 million people tuning in on May 9,” he said.
Johan said the issues which are set to be debated by the candidates were important and relevant to the people.
“It (the debate) won’t only be something in conjunction with an important event for the Umno leadership, but a pointer to whether the party will have the ability and authority to be an effective opposition in the country’s democratic system,” he said.
The Umno polls will see seven people vie for the top position, the largest number in the seven decades since its inception.
Apart from Tengku Razaleigh and Khairy, the other major candidate is acting president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The four other candidates, considered “small fry” in the race for the No. 1 position, are Mohamed Iqbal; Mohd Yusof Musa @ Jamaludin; entrepreneur and blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz, who is better known as “Mat Umno”; and, Ride for World #QuranHour motorcycle convoy head Rosile Saat.
