KUALA LUMPUR: The new Melaka state government is currently negotiating with the master developer of Melaka Gateway, KAJ Development Sdn Bhd, to change the freehold status of the 81-hectare (ha) man-made island to 99 years leasehold.

The island project comes under the first phase development of the Melaka Gateway spanning 1,504.9ha comprising three man-made islands and one natural island.

Melaka Industry, Trade and Investment Executive Councillor Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen said the negotiations with the concessionaire was expected to be finalised within one month.

“To date, we are not planning to downsize or reduce the size of the project but our discussions will revolve around the status of the land.

“Discussions are ongoing. We want to ensure the interests of the people, state and country will not be affected,” he told reporters after attending a meeting with the Council of Eminent Persons at Menara Ilham here, today.
