SRI KEMBANGAN: A total of 22 activists who were on a humanitarin mission aboard the Al-Awda flotilla ship to Gaza, including Malaysia's sole representative Associate Professor Dr Mohd Afandi Salleh, were reportedly 'abducted in international waters by Israeli troops' at 7.15pm Malaysia time.
Humanitarian Care Malaysia chairman, MyCARE, Associate Professor Dr Hafidzi Mohd Noor, said Israel's actions by 'kidnapping' the crew of Al-Awda in international waters is considered a violation of maritime law.
He said Israel did not have the right to prevent the Al-Awda ship from sailing in international waters and entering Gaza, while blocking all external access routes.
It is contrary to the Fourth Geneva Convention which forbids collective punishment on any community.
"The act of hijacking and forcibly escorting the crew into Israel is tantamount to robbery and kidnapping and they have no right to treat the crew like criminals.
"The Al-Awda ship is on a peaceful mission without provocation. It is not carrying weapons, only solidarity messages and a little medical aid, so Israel's actions are like piracy," he said at a press conference, at the MyCARE office, near here, today.
Also present were Mohd Affandi's wife, Ayu Mazlan, 45, and their two children, Anis Afifah, 20, and Adib Affandi, 11.
Currently, all Al-Awda crew are reported to be in safe condition and their ship is berthed at Ashdod Port.
