SEPANG: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was tonight given the honour of launching the newly-installed circuit lights at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) here.

Dr Mahathir was also prime minister when he launched the state-of-the-art facility back in 1999, fuelling the development of Malaysian motorsports along the way.

“It’s a great honour to be launching this very important addition to the facilities at SIC,” he said.

Meanwhile, SIC chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Azman Yahya said SIC had taken the initiative to instal lighting all around the circuit due to robust bookings for the facility.

This, he said, would allow SIC to sell more track time especially on weekends as well as night racing which was gaining popularity.

“We felt that the only opportunity for us to increase track bookings would be by opening the track at night, thus we decided to make it accessible by installing lights all around the track,” he explained.

Mohamed Azman said this was done by drawing on the expertise of people involved with circuit lighting projects like the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, Qatar’s Losail International Circuit, Jukasa Motor Speedway in Canada and Bahrain International Circuit.-- BERNAMA
