KUDAT: Thirty-two people from seven families were left homeless when a large fire destroyed their long house at Kampung Hobut near Matunggong here, yesterday.

No one was injured in the 5.40pm incident as all dwellers managed to escape the blaze in time.

It is understood that the longhouse burnt down completely.

District Fire and Rescue Department chief Ishak Jabas said that they received a distress call at 5.45pm and deployed seven personnel, assisted by four voluntary firefighters, to the site.

“The extremely hot and dry weather was a factor in the fire spreading so fast.

“The occupants were unable to save their belongings. There were those who only managed to save important documents, like their identity cards,” he said.

Ishak added that the department is investigating the cause of the fire and estimated losses.

The operation ended at 7.16pm.
