TUARAN: The hostel of Tarbiyatun Nisa Tahfiz Centre here which houses 41 female students was destroyed in a fire early this morning.
However, there were no injuries reported in the 6.50am incident as all the students managed to escape.
Tuaran Fire & Rescue Department chief Abdul Qawie Abdul Gapar said a call was received at 6.58am and 11 personnel with two engines were dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the double-storey hostel was 100 per cent burning and the firemen quickly started the operation to douse the fire.
“At the same time, checks found that all the students had escaped and they were gathering at the nearby compound, about 100m from the scene," he said.
Abdul Qawie said the hot weather and wind sparked the fire even bigger but the firemen managed to douse it before it spread to nearby houses.
“The fire was put out at 7.38am. We’re still investigating the cause of fire and the total loss,” he said.
Meanwhile, the hostel caretaker, Ustazah Aishah Abdul Halim, said the fire occurred after the Subuh ‘kuliah’ with some of the students while there were a few students who were unwell inside the hostel.
“As soon as the students went back to the hostel, the fire broke out on the ground floor, prompting one of the students to scream, ordering everyone to get out,” she said.
She said the students there, aged between seven and 26, include orphans and came from poor families. She said those who wish to help the girls and the school could do so by contacting her at 013-414 8823.
