KOTA BELUD: One of the two schoolchildren who were in critical condition after a drunk driver ploughed his car into them this morning has succumbed to her injuries.

Seven-year-old Maxryona Masdi of SK Tempasuk 2, died at the emergency ward of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu at 7pm today. She sustained serious head injuries.

Another victim Michelle Marianne David, 14, of SMK Pekan 1, is still in critical condition.

District police chief Superintendan Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said a follow-up investigation found that Maxyrona was the sister of Max Christty Masdi, 10, who was killed at the scene of the crash.

“We also found out that the two siblings were the nieces of the 54-year-old man, who is suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed into the victims this morning,” said Mohd Zaidi.

He then advised the public to stop sharing photos of the victims on social media to respect their family.

In the 6.45am incident , the three schoolchildren were standing by the roadside of Jalan Tempasuk and were waiting for their transport to school when the accident occurred.

The driver was traveling in a Nissan Sentra car when he lost control of the vehicle, which skidded and rammed into the girls before crashing into a concrete house.
