KUALA LUMPUR: Some 31 corporate and media organisations as well as government agencies have contributed RM411,000 towards the hosting of this year’s Malaysian Press Night (MWM 2019) for the coveted MPI Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards.
“The amount is an increase compared to last year’s RM398,000, thus proving the contributors’ commitment in recognising the works produced by journalists in the country,” MWM 2019 chairman Datuk Chamil Wariya told reporters at an event to thank the contributors, here, today.
Chamil, who is also the chief executive officer of Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), said Petronas continued its tradition of supporting the event by contributing RM300,000.
The other main contributors are Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Celcom Axiata Berhad, DRB Hicom Berhad, EXIM Bank (M) Berhad and Sarawak Energy Berhad.
Expanding on this year’s competition, Chamil said MPI received 267 entries for 20 categories.
“This is fewer than the 349 entries we received last year. We feel that this may be due to the entry fee imposed, which is one of the ways for us to ensure the articles submitted are of really good quality,” he said, adding that they were now into the second round of judging.
“The Excellent Photo Journalism category had the highest number of entries, with 42, followed by 25 entries each for the Excellent Photo Essay and Best Video News categories,” he said.
The highlight of the awards night, scheduled to be held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel, here, on April 26, is the presentation of the highest accolade, the Kajai Award, which offers RM30,000 cash, a trophy and certificate.
Winners of each category, except for the Tokoh Wartawan Negara and Tokoh Media, will take home RM10,000 cash, a trophy and certificate. - Bernama
