MELAKA: Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Melaka commemorated Earth Day 2019 with a special event showcasing its contributions towards the environment through its eco-friendly initiatives.

This was in line with the Wyndham Hotel Groups’ commitment to improving the health and sustainability of the planet and hence encouraging the emergence of eco-friendly hotels.

Recognising the need to play its part in ensuring a greener and cleaner environment, the hotel had undertaken various steps and projects to make this a possibility.

The hotel has gone to great extent throughout the past year through its many initiatives from energy and water conservation efforts, mechanical and lighting fittings to involvement from all respective departments.

Its general manager, Klaus Sennik said conserving the environment was the responsibility of every person and that included the hotel and its associates which have been tasked with ensuring that the hotel practices a "green" culture within and beyond the doors of the hotel.

Sennik was also instrumental in initiating the “say no to plastic straws” campaign this year.

The event, which took place at the hotel lobby, saw representatives from the various departments on hand to showcase their respective current and future initiatives.

The hotel associates gathered and dressed in the five colours representing the colours of the newly launched Polylactic Acid (PLA) straws.

During the event, the Food and Beverage Department showcased their use of eco-friendly napkins and breakfast menu, PLA cups, and their most recent initiative, the usage of PLA straws to replace the plastic straws.

The Housekeeping Department then presented their initiatives in the form of the usage of laundry baskets instead of plastic based bags which were previously used to deliver the pressed and cleaned items to the guests’ rooms.

This conversion was also done to their laundry bags which are now replaced with the non-woven bags, and bin liners made from eco-friendly paper.

There was also an initiative to reduce the usage of detergents by limiting washing for towels and bed sheets under the Wyndham Green initiative.

This initiative was introduced to guests on the linen cards placed on guests’ beds and hung in the bathrooms.

Meanwhile, the Engineering Department had started the ‘green’ initiative three years ago, hence bagging the hotel the most coveted green award in the hotel category for three years in a row between 2015 and 2017.

Among the initiatives included the use of the Stimo as an alternative to clean the air-conditioning coils to eliminate emission of gas chemicals, the use of solar panels on the roofs for the hot water system, LED bulbs throughout the hotel, electrodes placed in the water to prevent bacteria formation and eradicate air borne diseases, the usage of LPG gas system instead of cylinder gas as well as PPR piping to ensure better flow of water for energy savings.

The event culminated with the launch of the “Say no to plastic straws” of which the PLA straws, made from corn and potato starch in their multi colours were handed out in the PLA cups, symbolising the replacement of the plastic straws with these biodegradable, safe for the environment straws.

These straws which come in five colours, were sponsored by the hotel’s partners, Target Direction Sdn Bhd.
