KOTA BELUD: A newborn baby boy, wrapped in a cloth, has been found abandoned on the staircase of a house at Kampung Pompod, here, on Sunday.

The infant's mother left a note next to him, asking the houseowner to take care of her child.

It read: ”I, as the mother, have failed to look after Yusuf. Since he was born (June 29), he has not had milk. Let Yusuf stay with you madam."

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the houseowner only realised the baby boy's presence at 5.30am on Sunday, after hearing a cry.

He said the 33-year old clerk then took the baby and note to the nearest police headquarters. A police report was filed at 8.57am.

"The complainant claimed to have heard a baby crying and went out to check. She then found the newborn and a note.

"However, there was no mention of mother’s name in the note," he said when contacted, today.

Zaidi said the baby appeared to be in good health and no injury was found on him.

"The complainant claimed she has no idea who could have left the baby at her home.

"Nonetheless, police have sent the complainant and baby to the district hospital to undergo DNA test to determine their relationship, if any." he added.

Zaidi said the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for child abandonment.
