KUANTAN: A locked main gate forced neighbours to rescue five victims from a burning home in Perkampungan Sungai Isap, near here, by carrying them over the wire fence.

Abdul Rahim Othman, 59, whose house was located some 50m from the burning house, said they had to climb over the fence to help the victims.

“Since, the fire had razed the front portion of the house, I believe the (surviving) victims ran out through the back door,” he said.

“Some were bleeding and badly injured... the situation was chaotic.

“If we had managed to unlock the padlock for the main gate, it would have been a little easier for us to bring the victims out and save a motorcycle which was parked in front of the house.”

Rahim said he had just returned from a morning discourse (kuliah subuh) at a nearby mosque and was resting in his living room at about 7.40am when he heard people shouting “fire”.

“I rushed outside and saw smoke from the house nearby.

“I alerted a friend who works with the Fire and Rescue Department before asking my three nephews and two children to help the fire victims.

“We carried the victims, including a young boy, over the fence before firemen arrived.

“I noticed that one of the victims was badly injured.

“We managed to rescue five victims.”

Sharifah Azlina Syed Kassim, 37, and her two sons, Muhamad Haikal Hakimi Hairul, 11, and Mohamad Adam Daniel Hairul, 7, who lived in a single-storey wooden house perished in the fire.

The injured who were rescued from the burning house were identified as Sharifah Azlina’s husband, Hairol Khalid, 38, Sharifah Azlina’s brother Syed Azman Syed Kassim, 25, his wife Norazilah Abdullah, 23, and Norazilah’s sister Nor Syawalina Abdullah, 19.

Syed Azman’s son Muhammad Alif Asyraf, 6, who escaped unhurt, said his mother had woken him up and told him to run out of the house.

He said pieces of wood were raining down on them from the ceiling at the time.

“I am not sure what happened... I remember my mother shouting at me to leave room.

“I managed to run outside the house before neighbours helped me to climb over the fence,” he said.

Four houses were damaged, and two were razed.

It is learnt that two victims managed to escape.
