HANOI: Malaysian investors and businessmen abroad must continue to safeguard their reputation and steer clear of corrupt practices.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Malaysian business community were known for their expertise, friendliness, understanding on the socio-culture needs and knowledge of their respective host country’s laws.
“Malaysians are now all over the world, including in Brazil and even in African countries. They carry out businesses, providing (various) expertise and are well-respected.
“We want Malaysians who are abroad to be continuously respected, but it will be a problem if they practice corruption. Please refrain from doing so. Malaysians must be able to provide good and friendly services,” Dr Mahathir said.
The prime minister said this in his speech during a meeting with the Malaysian business community in Vietnam here.
He also expressed his appreciation for Malaysian businessmen for their ability to resolve challenging situations abroad, adhering to local laws and efforts to learn native languages in respective countries.
“In Vietnam, Malaysian businessmen are also doing well... you can convince them to invest in Malaysia.”
Dr Mahathir said a large number of Malaysian investors in Vietnam have businesses back home and that had contributed to the Malaysian and the regional economy.
There currently 27 Malaysian companies investing and operating in Vietnam mainly in banking and petroleum sectors.
