BAYAN LEPAS: A fireman, who collapsed while participating in a full-scale emergency drill at the Penang International Airport (PIA) today, has been pronounced dead.

The fireman, identified as Shaffiiee Hassan, 59, was attached to the airport’s Fire Rescue Services.

It is learnt that Shaffiiee had earlier complained of tiredness during the exercise about 10.15am. He was then brought to a fire truck next to the airport runway.

Not long after, he collapsed and fell from the truck unconscious.

Media photographers who were recording the event initially thought that it was part of the exercise before realising that it was an actual emergency.

Medical personnel rushed to his side and performed CPR before rushing him to the Penang Hospital via ambulance.

His death was later confirmed by Southwest district police chief Superintendent A.A. Anbalagan in a statement today.

Anbalagan said a post-mortem examination showed that Shaffiiee died of ischemic heart disease.
