JERANTUT: A villager was stunned when he found a hand grenade while carrying out land clearing works in his backyard along Jalan Pedah, Jerantut Feri near here yesterday.

Jamaluddin Sulaiman, 61, was doing some digging using a backhoe at about 11am when it hit a hard object.

District police chief Superintendent Mazlan Hassan said the man assumed that he had hit a rock but later discovered it was a rusty hand grenade.

"Fearing his safety, the man immediately alerted the Jerantut Feri police beat before the police bomb disposal unit was dispatched to the scene. Investigations revealed it was a hand grenade which might have been left behind during the war.

"We were unsure if the explosive was still active or might pose any threat, but it was detonated at the same site at about 3.20pm yesterday," he added.
