MELAKA: A violent skirmish which erupted outside the hall where the PKR Youth Congress was taking place today disrupted the flow of events at the wing's meet.
PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who was in the midst of giving his policy speech, had to momentarily halt, as the situation outside the hall began to get heated.
Even the audio feed transmitted outside the hall was halted, while a video feed of Akmal's speech on the PKR Facebook page was disrupted.
Even as some debates proceeded later, many delegates who took to the rostrum reminded delegates in the cramped hall to remain calm.
"Next year, we will try to get a bigger hall for our congress," said Johor PKR Youth chief Yuneswaran Ramaraj as he debated the motion to support the Youth chief's policy speech.
Pasir Mas PKR Youth head Mohd Izhan Ramli said that those aligned with the sacked PKR Youth permanent chairman and his deputy were barred from entering the hall.
"The problem happened when (delegates) were electing a new permanent chairman and his deputy, following the sacking of the previous post-holders due to their ages.
“All those ‘geng geng dulu’ (the old gang).
“As a result of the disruption, many of us were unable to enter the hall. The rest of us who travelled far to come here are not allowed in. It is disappointing," said Izhan, who is Kelantan deputy PKR Youth chief.
PKR Youth had sacked its permanent chairman Muhamad Mizan Adli Mohd Nor and his deputy Mohd Ramly Ahmad on Nov 27, eight days before the start of the congress.
In a letter sighted by the New Straits Times dated Nov 27 and signed by PKR Youth national secretary Ahmad Syukri Che Ab Razak, PKR lists several reasons for the dismissal.
Syukri said the termination of both men from their positions was on the basis of their age (they are both over 35 years old), which disqualifies them from the Youth posts.
