KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s official visit to the White House has exposed the lies and false accusations of the opposition, said Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
In a statement yesterday, Ismail said former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and other opposition leaders had previously claimed that Najib would not only be detained were he to visit the US, but his plane would not even be allowed to enter the country’s airspace.
The four-eyed meeting between Najib and US president Donald Trump proved the contrary, as Trump and his administration showed a high level of respect to Najib and Malaysia as a whole.
“The issue with the US Department of Justice is not as big as Dr Mahathir and the other opposition leaders have made it seem like, all this while.
“It is clear that the concerns they raised are elaborate lies and false accusations fed to the rakyat,” Ismail said.
Najib met Trump at the White House yesterday morning (local time) as part of a three-day working visit at the invitation of the president.
He is only the third Malaysian Prime Minister to visit a US president in Washington DC, after Tun Mahathir in Jan 1984 and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in July 2004.
The meeting was also in conjunction with the anniversary of 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
