KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), which boasts Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its chairman, has become a tool of DAP.
Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the situation is lamentable, and reflected in the fact that the party's values are vague.
“When it comes to the ‘Parti Bunga Raya’ (an indirect reference to PPBM), sorry to say, I do not see what values they want to bring forth.
"They say they want to fight for the Malays and Islam, but they are in a pact and are being made a tool by DAP, which is clearly anti-Malay and (anti-)Islam.
"This can be seen in DAP's constitution, which does not mention Islam as the religion of the federation, as it wants to turn Malaysia into a secular nation," said Najib in his presidential speech at the Umno general assembly.
He added that in this regard, Dr Mahathir has crossed the line, and is now allied with his own "political enemies", which he had fought with in the past.
"Speaking about Mahathir, back then... it was also on this stage that he reminded that the Malays easily forget, but to us this man has crossed the line”.
“He was willing to join forces and align with his very own political enemies and enemies of his own principles for decades - just to fulfil a personal and family agenda," said Najib.
In an apparent reference to Dr Mahathir, the prime minister also said that one former Umno president, who is now the leader of an Opposition party, is still trapped in a colonial mindset.
“To the extent that he is willing to scorn people of Bugis ancestry," he said.
Najib added that this was not what Umno is all about, as the party celebrates the ethnic diversity of the Malay community.
